Indian States by HDI

March 15, 2010

I recently stumbled upon a ranking of individual Indian states by their Human Development Index (HDI) scores. From the Indian Handbook on Social Welfare Statistics (2007):

HDI (1999)
Kerala 0.638
Punjab 0.537
Tamil Nadu 0.531
Maharashtra 0.523
Haryana 0.509
Gujarat 0.479
Karnataka 0.478
India (all) 0.472
West Bengal 0.472
Rajasthan 0.424
Andhra Pradesh 0.416
Orissa 0.404
Madhya Pradesh 0.394
Uttar Pradesh 0.388
Assam 0.386
Bihar 0.367

At the top of the list, you’ll notice Communist-ruled Kerala. From 1999 to 2007, India’s overall HDI grew by about 30%. Assuming all the states grew at exactly the same rate that the nation did, I went ahead and multiplied them by that amount and threw in a few black African nations to give us a gauge on how things might be in recent years:

HDI (2007)
Kerala 0.827
Jamaica 0.766
Punjab 0.696
Tamil Nadu 0.688
Namibia 0.686
Maharashtra 0.678
Haryana 0.660
Gujarat 0.621
Karnataka 0.619
India (all) 0.612
West Bengal 0.612
Angola 0.564
Rajasthan 0.550
Kenya 0.541
Andhra Pradesh 0.539
Orissa 0.524
Uganda 0.514
Madhya Pradesh 0.511
Uttar Pradesh 0.503
Assam 0.500
Malawi 0.493
Bihar 0.476

Uttar Pradesh is home of the Taj Mahal.

While India has big time discrepancies among states, development doesn’t seem to be concentrated in one specific geographic region. See: Mexican States by HDI

Update: The BBC wonders why Kerala isn’t Singapore and why Kerala doesn’t attempt to imitate more successful Indian states. The NYT gives us a response.

Kerala also has the most women working. Kerala also exports workers to the Gulf as nurses, maids, cooks, laborers etc, who said most of their money back home to their families in Kerala. These Indian workers are often exploited and abused by their Arab “employers”. There’s much in the news about it and India is struggling with how to deal with it.

PS: check the video linked to in my monitor. LOL

    Here’s an interesting HBD observation about nostril size and vocal tone that I never thought of before;

It’s a short vid and the nose thing comes at about the halfway point.

“The NYT gives us a response.”
The article blames low education for the newly rich farmers blowing their money. I wonder if measures of conspicuous consumption would show it to be much lower in Kerala.

i think development of kerala takes place equally among all its districts and kerala concentrates more on basic living needs rather than to show off like other states in india are trying to do. i know about kerala people they are amazing. its a must visit state.

Taj Mahal is in Delhi, not in Uttar Pradess and besides the development of Kerala in contrast to the rest of India is no new thing. In fact the UN has made a mdel out of it for all developing countries – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerala_model

The Taj Mahal is in Agra, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on the banks of the river Yamuna.
Kerala is also a state that is heavily in debt. But Kerala also has the best ‘health care system’ in India.

Kerala is not ruled by communists. All these Communists and right wing Congress ruled alternatively. Keralas development is not a contribution of communists. Look at the plight of West Bengal which was a communist fort. True reason behind Kerala is education and health care promoted by Christian church and missionaries and the NRI money coming from Gulf countries.
